Just a heads up that the event moved to a state that is hostile to gender-non-conforming folks and that I won't be attending in protest.

The LinuxFoundation's decision to host Kubecon in Utah was made years in advance of Utah's HB257 and given the scale of the event, is not easy to undwind. This bill was passed after Kubecon was committed to SLC, but obviously we moved the WasmCon to co-locate with Kubecon this Fall. I believe that the LF, including both the CNCF, Kubecon, and wasmDay hold a very high bar for DEI, and as a regular co-chair have worked hard to meet those standards.

As someone who does care about this, legislative bills like this is very hard to plan around. According to the CNCF blog, "In 2023 alone, over 520 anti-LGBTQ+ bills were introduced in U.S. state legislatures. The ACLU is currently tracking 387 anti-LGBTQ bills across 37 U.S. states." It is a sad situation.

The LF has published two relevant blog posts on this topic:

We were saddened to see another state’s legislators pass an anti-equal rights bill yesterday in Utah. We have been monitoring this situation in relation to our upcoming KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North…
Education and collaboration are vital to the future of the CNCF ecosystem and it is imperative to us that everyone in the community that wants to participate feels welcome to do so regardless of…

Relevant from the page:
To clarify the legislation, this law does not extend to privately owned venues, including those hosting our conference and related activities. The Salt Palace Convention Center, our conference venue, and the connected Hyatt Regency Salt Lake City are not affected by this law. Both have inclusive, all-gender restroom facilities available.

Additionally:

Connect with the LGBTQ Community Resources in Salt Lake City. Discover news outlets, advocacy groups, and a variety of SLC LGBTQ community organizations.

@L. Pereira All of that being said, I am not trying to convince you or change your perspective, just inform and share what I know here.

I am only a volunteer with the CNCF; however, if you would like to chat here or 1:1, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. I am also happy to help you find someone at the LF to chat with if you would like to discuss it further with them.
