I had verified that nothing in-tree called is_pristine or is_filled, but you've reminded me that I should check cg-clif, and... it also doesn't use those. So I think the answer to that question in particular is that it should be fine to remove pub.

Parts of this involved some reasoning that I found a little tricky, so I'd definitely appreciate more thorough review.
