This reverts commit 2fd1abfff6902127e12eb1882cfa1b0864f4adce.

A number of fuzz bugs are cropping up and one is definitely related to this and while I can't reproduce the others I think they're all related to this as well. This isn't a critical optimization or anything so let's just revert this for now.
