If possible, I'd like to avoid symlinks in the repo for Windows developers (requires admin privs on some versions of Windows or "developer mode" enabled on more recent ones).

That said, I won't hold this up for the few Wasmtime developers that use Windows. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect those developers to use a fairly recent version of Windows with developer mode enabled.

Nah that's a good point, if I get some time I'll try to write a dedicated README, but for now let's skip the symlinks.
